Sexual Violence Task Force Meeting w/ State Rep. Victoria Neave

State Rep. Victoria Neave Announces Creation of Sexual Violence Task Force to Hold Meeting During Sexual Assault Awareness Month
DALLAS, TEXAS ─ State Representative Victoria Neave announces the creation of a special Sexual Violence Task Force with leaders from House District 107 and the Dallas area to, among other things, address the issue of sexual violence in our communities by collaborating and exchanging ideas to generate potential legislative solutions. The Task Force will bring together subject-matter experts in various fields, law enforcement, stakeholders, and victim advocates whom are working in their various capacities to address sexual violence in our state.

“Our office fought hard during the last Legislative Session to bring attention to the issues of sexual assault and thousands of untested rape kits in Texas and are continuing to work to implement our legislative solutions,” said State Rep. Victoria Neave. “I am hopeful that this Task Force can help generate creative ideas for laws that we can file and work to make a reality so that victims do not fear retribution for reporting sexual assault and so that our State prioritizes this issue as a public health concern.”

The Sexual Violence Task Force will hold its first meeting on Monday, April 23, 2018, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Eastfield College (3737 Motley Dr., Mesquite, TX 75150, Building S). The Task Force’s areas of focus include: improved data and collection, improving protections for employees who report assault and harassment, campus sexual violence, the rape kit backlog, and improving access to sexual assault nurse examiners. Meetings are open to the public.

During the 2017 Legislative Session, State Rep. Victoria Neave passed House Bills 1729 and 4102, which allow people to donate $1 or more towards the testing of evidence in sexual assault cases when they apply for or renew their driver’s license, personal ID card, commercial driver’s license, and motor vehicle registration. Since January, the Texas Department of Public Safety collected nearly $150,000 in donations, with over 51,000 people donating between $1 to $5,000.

Victoria Neave represents Texas House District 107, which includes parts of East Dallas, Mesquite, and Garland. She serves on the House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence and the House Committee on County Affairs. Rep. Neave is the Vice-Chair of the Young Texans Legislative Caucus and is also a member of the Democratic Caucus, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, the Women’s Health Caucus, the Veterans Caucus, and the Manufacturers Caucus. She was named “Freshman of the Year” by the House Democratic Caucus and to the “5 Best Legislators in North Texas” by the Dallas Observer.
